FMCSA Phases Out MC Numbers: What Transport Industry Professionals Need to Know - News

9/16/2025

September 16, 2025
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is eliminating the use of Motor Carrier (MC) numbers, transitioning to a USDOT-only system by October 1, 2025.
FMCSA phases out MC Numbers in transitions to USDOT
This change aims to streamline operations and enhance regulatory oversight.

FMCSA Transitions MC Numbers to USDOT Numbers

Historically, MC numbers were assigned to carriers with interstate operating authority, while USDOT numbers tracked safety and compliance. Under the Unified Registration System (URS), FMCSA is consolidating these identifiers to simplify the registration process and reduce fraud.

What Does This Mean for You?

If you're in the transport industry, here's what you need to do:
  1. Verify Your USDOT Number:
Ensure your USDOT number is active and accurate.
  2. Update Your MCS-150:
File the MCS-150 form to update your company information.
  3. Transition to USDOT-Only Operations:
After October 1, 2025, use your USDOT number exclusively for all regulatory purposes.
  4. Inactivate Your MC Number:
If you no longer require your MC number, submit a Voluntary Revocation of Operating Authority using Form OCE-46.
For more information and to complete necessary forms, visit the FMCSA Registration website FMCSA.
